Policy
Prison to Prosperity AM recognizes many flaws in our criminal legal system that need to be addressed. We believe that mandatory minimums lead to ineffective prison sentences. It definitely bolsters the United States spot as number 1 in the world with the highest prison population. The United States accounts for 25% of the prison population worldwide. Allbeit we only account for 5% of the global population.
Prison to Prosperity AM is concerned by the overwhelming number of youths finding themselves in prison for murder without murdering anyone. Prosecutors leverage the Felony Murder Rule to convict one or more people regardless of who imposed an action resulting in death.
Prison to Prosperity AM is following racial and economic disparities among the jails and prisons throughout the country. We also support Abolishing Qualified Immunity. Abolishing QI will allow for police officers, prosecutors, and judges to be held accountable for unethical and illegal practices using their position of power.
Advocacy
We are seeing more people who were originally incarcerated in their teens serving long prison sentences. It is problematic when a person is coming back to society with zero life skills. Having never had a driver’s license, a bank account, a job, formal education… the list goes on. Some of these people have nobody to go home to upon their release. Prison programs are inadequate in preparing people for the realities of transitioning to the free world.
We are developing pathways for people to transition back into society with realistic and achievable steps to take leading them to independence. Whether it be a housing shortfall, finding a job, finding a school, getting a driver’s license. Keeping people on task to make it to probation appointments. Coordinating medical and mental health care needs.
We are advocating to prevent people from going back to prison. We want to bring them home and keep them home.
